Protect your teeth against gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss.
Most of us end up with some degree of gum disease or periodontitis in our lifetime. Some people are more susceptible than others, particularly those with a family history and smokers.
Periodontics, commonly referred to as gum and bone disease, typically starts with bacterial plaque (tartar) that forms and hardens on the teeth, causing toxins to develop and irritate gums. As the disease progresses, periodontal pockets extend deeper, causing bacteria and toxins to move down until the health of the bone holding the teeth is jeopardized. Signs include red, swollen or tender gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, loose teeth and chronic bad breath.
As periodontitis progresses, the gum becomes looser around the teeth and eventually attacks the ligaments and bone that support the teeth. Severe gum disease can destroy the gums and lead to tooth loss.
At-home dental care can help prevent gum disease and regular dental exams are imperative to prevent and detect gum disease early thereby improving the overall outcome of treatment.
Sheridan Dental Centre offers the services of an on-site periodontist, Dr.Sade, to serve our patients’ needs.
