About Botox for TMJ Disorder & Headache Treatment

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw and skull. When it’s functioning correctly, it allows your jaw to do all the things it’s designed to, like chew and speak. The TMJ is complex and symptoms can arise for several reasons—many of them linked to stress.

Botox can be part of an effective treatment for the pain and headaches associated with TMJ disorder. Learn about our other TMJ treatments.

What Is Botox & How Can it Help Relieve Pain?

Botox injections are made from a substance called botulinum toxin. Injections are administered in very small amounts into the affected TMJ muscles and fibres that play a big role in causing headaches and jaw pain.

Botox injections work by blocking pain messages from your nerves so your muscles can relax. They’re most effective in relieving pain when administered regularly, so we recommend treatment approximately every three months.

About The Procedure

In a thorough dental examination, your dentist will evaluate your TMJ disorder symptoms and determine whether Botox may be a good solution for you.

Your dentist will inject Botox into specific areas in a separate appointment, such as your jaw muscles and forehead, based on your needs.

If you feel some discomfort after the injections, gently apply a cold pack. Your dentist may suggest other specific aftercare.

It typically takes a few days to begin to feel relief from your TMJ symptoms, though some people may get relief in as little as a day or two.

It’s important to remember that Botox injections could come with rare risks and side effects, just like with any procedure. But it’s also important to note that in small doses administered by a professional, botulinum toxin is safe and not injected into your bloodstream.

Some common side effects after a Botox treatment include:

  • Tenderness or bruising at the site of the injection
  • Headaches
  • Nausea or flu-like symptoms
  • Temporarily drooping eyelid

Botulism poisoning is a very rare occurrence. Our doctors are highly trained and dedicated to ensuring you’re as comfortable and as safe as possible with any procedure done in our office.

About Juvéderm Lip Fillers

If you’re looking to improve the youthful fullness of your lips or decrease fine lines around your mouth caused by years of smoking, we recommend considering Juvéderm.

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, and as a result, our lips can become thinner and dryer. Smoking, too, takes its toll on your skin. Juvéderm dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the body and helps us retain water and moisture.

About The Procedure

Following a consultation with your dentist, they will mark your treatment areas. They will inject Juvéderm into the target areas, massaging gently to distribute it evenly and help with swelling. The process takes between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on your needs.

Some swelling and bruising after your procedure are common, and you may notice some redness, bumps, or itchiness for a few weeks after. If you ever have any concerns about how you’re feeling after the procedure, don’t hesitate to call us.

After your procedure, we advise that you relax, stay out of the sun, avoid wearing makeup, and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours to help with recovery.

Smoking lines refer to vertical lines that may be present on or surrounding both your upper and lower lips or just one lip. Although they can be caused by years of smoking, they can also appear with age as your skin becomes thinner or dry.

After Juvéderm injections are administered in the affected area, it can help improve the appearance of wrinkles and make lips look fuller.

The results of Juvéderm injections can last about 6 to 12 months, but each patient’s results can vary.

Though risks are rare, it’s important to understand them before any procedure. Even though discomfort and swelling are common after the injection procedure, these side effects shouldn’t last more than a few days.

We’re always more than happy to discuss the possible (but rare) risks with patients during your appointment so you’re aware and educated about any complications, what the process entails, and what to expect for the next few days.
