Safe & Comfortable Sedation Dentistry

It’s not uncommon to feel uneasy about specific dental procedures. In fact, more than one-third of people have some level of fear or anxiety about going to the dentist.

It’s essential to us that nervous feelings about dental care don’t impede your oral health care. We offer oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for a more calming health care experience for those who desire it.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to allow a patient to relax during their procedure. In most types of sedation dentistry, the patient is awake but will be relaxed, albeit a little groggy.

We offer oral sedation, which can provide a mild to moderate level of sedation by taking a pill about an hour before your procedure. We also offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, which is administered through a mask and controlled by your dentist throughout your procedure.

Sedation dentistry can also refer to dental work done under general anesthesia, which will generally have you unconscious throughout.

Who Can Be Sedated For Dental Work?

Sedation can be used for many dental procedures, from a routine cleaning to cavity fillings or more involved therapeutic treatment. For patients with feelings of anxiety around the dentist, it’s a great, comforting option.

Sedation dentistry is also good for:

  • People with a low pain tolerance
  • People with a strong gag reflex
  • People who find it difficult to sit still in a dental chair

Please contact us if you think your child would feel more comfortable at the dentist using sedation, and we can discuss options.

Sedation Dentistry Preparation & Recovery

At Sheridan Dental Centre, we always prioritize patient education and comfort, so we’re happy to discuss your sedation options in-depth before your procedure.

You’ll need to arrange a safe ride home after your sedated procedure, and we encourage you to take the rest of the day off to relax. It’s common to feel groggy or drowsy, and some people feel a bit nauseous or have a headache after.

A Smile Awaits You

Your comfort at the dentist is important to your ongoing overall health. Please contact us to book an appointment or if you have any questions about how dental sedation can improve your dental experience.
